The 2024 French Open men's singles championship will feature two top-five ranked players when third-ranked Carlos Alcaraz takes on fourth-ranked Alexander Zverev on Sunday at 9 a.m. ET from Roland-Garros in Paris, France. Both players were tested in their semifinal matches on Friday. Zverev posted a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 win over seventh-ranked Casper Ruud. Alcaraz stunned second-ranked Jannik Sinner 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Zverev has won seven of the 11 all-time meetings with Alcaraz, although Alcaraz won their last meeting, a 6-3, 6-1 decision at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif., in March.
Alcaraz is the -300 favorite (risk $300 to win $100) on the money line, while Zverev is a +220 underdog. The game total over/under is 38.5. Before making any 2024 French Open picks, you need to see what proven SportsLine handicapper Jose Onorato has to say.
Onorato grew up playing competitive tennis in Caracas, Venezuela. After coming to the U.S., he trained with famed coach Nick Bollettieri at IMG Academy in Florida and faced players like Robert Farah, now one of the world's top-ranked doubles players.
Onorato, who holds dual degrees in finance and economics from the University of Miami, does extensive research before placing any tennis bets. He studies current form, players' tendencies on a particular surface, weather conditions and many other relevant factors. That systematic approach helped Onorato go 160-104-8 +97.32U - since 2022.
2024 French Open men's final preview
Zverev has had to battle to reach this point. He defeated Spain's Rafael Nadal 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-3 in the opening round, before defeating David Goffin of Belgium 7-6 (4), 6-2, 6-2. In the third round, he was tested to the limit, escaping with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (3) win over Tallon Griekspoor of The Netherlands. He defeated Holger Rune of Denmark 4-6, 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (2), 6-2, in the fourth round, before knocking off Alex De Minaur of Australia in the quarterfinals 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-4.
Zverev, 27, turned pro in 2013, and has compiled a record of 495-233 (68%). He improved to 34-9 on the year, and 16-3 on clay with Friday's win over Ruud. He is making his ninth appearance at the French Open, and has compiled a 34-8 (81%) mark at the tournament. This is the farthest he has advanced at Roland-Garros, after reaching the semifinals three previous times as well as the quarterfinals twice.
Alcaraz, 21, has been a professional since 2018, and has quickly climbed up the rankings. He earned his first Grand Slam title in 2022 when he defeated Ruud 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (1), 6-3 to win the U.S. Open. He won his second Grand Slam at Wimbledon in 2023 with a 1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 victory over four-time defending champion Novak Djokovic. He reached the semifinals of the 2023 French Open.
Alcaraz has played well at Paris, posting a 17-3 (85%) record at the French Open. He is also solid on clay, going 11-3 on the surface this year and 135-34 in his career. Alcaraz has compiled a 24-5 overall record in 2024, and is 257-68 all-time. He has claimed 14 career titles and four runner-up finishes over a seven-year span. See who to pick here.
